August Total number of species for the year 154 30th As expected, with a north-westerly at this time of the year, we had quite a fall of birds that included 58 Lesser Whitethroats, 33 Whitethroats, 8 Willow Warblers, 3 Chiffchaff and 1 Wryneck at Hope Point. Also of note moving along the cliff-top were 3 Yellow Wagtails, 18 Long-tailed Tits, 4 Tree Sparrows and a Great Spotted Woodpecker. 27th Big reduction in numbers of birds, the only new birds in the area were a single Hobby,Marsh Harrier and Turtle Dove. 26th Around the area were 4 Whinchats, 1 Wheatear, 2 Redstarts, 16 Whitethroats, 12 Lesser Whitethroats, 13 Blackcaps, 16 Willow Warblers, 1 Chiffchaff, 2 Pied and 2 Spotted Flycatchers. A small movement along the cliff-top included 2 Ringed Plovers, 6 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Tree Pipit, 12 Tree Sparrows and 5 Siskins. 25th Good numbers of migrants in the area today included 1 Redstart, 12 Whinchat, 1 Grasshopper Warbler (new for the year), 18 Lesser Whitethroats, 12 Whitethroats, 2 Chiffchaffs, 21 Willow Warblers, 1 Pied Flycatcher and 1 Spotted Flycatcher 24th A reasonable fall of migrants included 7 Wheatears, 3 Whinchats, 1 Redstart, 18 Whitethroats, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 2 Blackcaps, 3 Chiffchaffs, 9 Willow Warblers, 2 Pied Flycatchers and the bird of the day a Greenish Warbler. Unfortunately it only gave brief calls and views for 30 minutes during the morning before it disappeared. 18th In the area there was a small arrival of migrants, 1 Whinchat, 17 Wheatears, 7 Whitethroats and 9 Willow Warblers, whilst 38 Swifts and 11 Sand Martins flew SW. On the sea we had 50 Gannets, 3 Eiders, 10 Whimbrel and 1 Balearic Shearwater all moving downchannel. The Harbour Porpoise still feeding offshore. 17th A quick walk around the Paddock produced 3 Blackcaps, 1 Garden Warbler, 4 Whitethroats, 1 Sedge Warbler, 1 Chiffchaff and 11 Willow Warblers. 16th On the rocks in the Bay were 2 Little Egrets and 31 Mediterranean Gulls, our highest count.
Good numbers of migrants with 4 Yellow Wagtails, 15 Wheatears, 2 Whinchats, 1 Common Redstart, 6 Reed Warblers, 18 Whitethroats, 6 Lesser Whitethroats, 1 Chiffchaff and 7 Willow Warblers. On the clifftop 62 Swifts, 10 Sand Martins and 150 Swallows flew SW. On the sea there was a movement SW of 27 Sandwich Terns and 110 Common Terns. The Harbour Porpoise still offshore. 11th Migrants are increasing and in the area there were 6 Wheatears, 10 Reed Warblers, a single Sedge Warbler, 31 Whitethroats, 5 Lesser Whitethroats, 2 Blackcaps and 9 Willow Warblers. The Harbour Porpoise is feeding on the mackerel shoals off Hope Point. 10th Two Ravens seen over Hope Point 7th A few migrants in the area included Wheatear, Whitethroat, Willow Warbler and Spotted Flycatcher 5th A Black Kite was seen today over fields near MacSwiggans at 10.45 before it moved off NW, it was seen flying towards Martin Mill some 15 minutes later. Also around the area were a smattering of newly arrived Yellow Wagtails, Willow Warblers and Whitethroats as well as 200 plus Common Swifts feeding over the village. 1st A Marsh Harrier came in off the sea and drifted NW at approx. 09.30. Little else around apart from the first Willow Warblers of the Autumn.
