Total number of species for the Year 88
28th A superb find by Jack at 0800. Pretty much followed the pattern of the 2006 bird by departing high to the SW at 0900, although it showed better and to a few more people (11 in total). The day of the Zitter.
27th Today Gerald, Nigel, Simon, Phil and I gathered at the Monument for a vis. mig. We had 632 Wood Pigeons, 8 Stock Doves, 5 Swallows, 2 White and 2 Alba Wagtails, 23 Meadow Pipits, 63 Linnets, 2 Siskins and a Reed Bunting. We also had a movement of birds of prey, a Kestrel and an Osprey came in off the sea, up to 4 Buzzards soared over the golfcourse and the local Peregrines patrolled the cliff-top looking for a meal. Grounded birds included 2 Chiffchaffs and a Black Redstart and at sea a Great Northern Diver, 3 Red-throated Divers and 4 Eiders flew upchannel. Also a Harbour Porpoise was seen off of the rocks. JRC 24th Very little of note today apart from an extremely pale Common Buzzard flying SW and 3 Brimstone and 1 Red Admiral Butterfly. 22nd Just had a report of a Wheatear on Sunday........our first for the year. 21st I joined Gerald, who had been out since 06:30, on the cliff-top at 08:30 where we had a movement north of 1 Grey and 8 Alba Wagtails, 14 Meadow Pipits, 20 Linnets, 26 Siskins, 3 Reed Buntings, 1385 Starlings and 3569 Chaffinches. On the sea were 129 Brents and 2 Greylag Geese. Elsewhere around the area were 11 Chiffchaffs and 8 Firecrests. JRC 14th A cliff-top watch from 09:00 until 11:30 produced 323 Chaffinches, 14 Siskins, a Brambling and 108 Starlings all moving north along the coast, whilst 85 Brents moved upchannel. Inland 2 pairs of Sparrowhawks were displaying over the far woods and in the farm 2 Little Owls were calling. JRC 13th At last we have lost that bitter easterly wind and are into a light north westerly. On the cliff-top Brendan, Nigel, Phil and I had a small movement of c.100 Chaffinches and some Siskins and Greenfinches. Also 2 Common Buzzards, possible migrants, moved off north. Around the area we had a White Wagtail, a Firecrest and, new for the year, some Red-legged Partridges. In the Bay the Water Pipit still frequents the grassy cliff-face by the White House. JRC 6th In the bitterly cold NE wind Brendan, Gerald, Phil, Richard and I met and wandered aound the area in search of anything, our only birds of note a Firecrest and 5 Crossbills. However in the Bay, where we retired for a coffee, we had 20+ Red-throated Divers, 15 Great Crested Grebe, a Shelduck, Curlew, 2 Purple Sandpipers, a Peregrine and a Common Seal. Along at Kingsdown the wintering male Black Redstart is still at the Undercliff. JRC lings |
