Phil and I were the only birders out today and it wasn't long before we realised why.....

the only birds of note were a Chiffchaff in the Farm, 2 Stonechats, 7 Rock Pipits and 14 Fulmars prospecting for nest sites at Kingsdown undercliff and on the little road by Walletts Court was an adult female Snow Bunting.JRC

7th

At dawn there was a small movement of finches north which stopped when the rain started at about 8 o'clock. Around the area little was found apart from a Woodcock and a Woodlark, possibly because most of the time was spent sheltering in the farmyard barn. Between 11.00 and 12.00 a sea watch produced 147 Brent Geese,

33 Shelducks, 3 Red-breasted Mergansers, 39 Wigeon, 12 Dunlin, 18 lapwings moving

upchannel and over 2000 Starling coming in off the sea.JRC

6th

A light NW breeze produced a good movement north of 11 Meadow Pipits, 26 Swallows,

a House Martin, 43 Skylarks, 15 Chaffinches,5 Bramblings,76 Redpolls, 12 Siskins,

4 Bullfinches,6 Yellowhammers and a Lapland Bunting. In the Farm Wood were

6 Goldcrests and a Blackcap, on the cliff-top 2 Stonechats and in the only stubble field

left there were 5 Woodlarks. JRC

Phil had a Ring-necked Parakeet and 2 Jack Snipe, new species for the year.JRC

2nd

A sea watch for 2 hours produced very little apart from 1 Red-throated Diver,

1 Black-throated Diver, 30 Gannets, 12 Common Scoter and a Short-eared Owl coming in off the sea from the south. On the cliff-top 12 Swallows went north. JRC

1st

In a light NW breeze birds were moving N along the cliff-top or coming straight in from the sea and going NW. Moving along the cliff were 12 Alba Wagtails, 5 Swallows,

64 Redpolls, 148 Goldfinches, 34 Greenfinches, 108 Siskins and 2 Yellowhammers whilst coming in from the sea and moving off NW were 6 Stock Doves, 22 Skylarks, 36 Starlings and 155 Chaffinches.

On the Lees was a male Ring Ouzel and at 10:30 a Short-eared Owl tried to fly South

whilst being attacked by the local Peregrine. JRC
