March 2005
Monday 28th Slightly better conditions today, but still few birds around, with 3 Black Redstarts, 70 Starlings north, 24 Carrion Crows in, 5 Buzzards south, although a RED KITE (untagged) north at 1230 was a welcome bonus. Saturday 26th The poor weather continued with 6 Sandwich Terns offshore, 70 Chaffinches and 25 Linnets over, with a single Goldcrest on the ground. Friday 25th More fog produced just 4 Black Redstarts, 4 alba Wagtails and 6 Buzzards in. Thursday 24th A total of 7 Black Redstarts in dismal weather. Wednesday 23rd Brief gaps in the foggy conditions produced 5 Black Redstarts, 2 Chiffchaffs and a single Firecrest. A Brimstone was also seen. Sunday 20th An excellent morning with 36 Goldcrests, 3 Siskins, 85 Redwings, 1 Lapwing and 1 Stonechat in the area. It was the sea, however that produced some excellent birds with a varied passage, all moving up-channel: 2 Ringed Plovers, 18 Teal, 5 Common Scoter, 22 Shoveler, 311 Brent Geese, 5 Wigeon, 23 Red-breasted Mergansers, 12 Gadwall, 5 Avocet, 2 Velvet Scoter, 8 Dunlin and 3 Pintail. Record of the day however was of 2 Garganey - new for the area. Saturday 19th Migrants today included 7 Chiffchaffs, 2 Firecrests, 4 Goldcrests, 1 Black Redstart and 1 Blackcap. There was also a movement of Redwings last night, with several present this morning in the area. Friday 18th Today's total of 10 Wheatears, 3 Chiffchaffs, 2 Blackcaps and 2 Stonechats heralds the start of spring passage. A single Brimstone was also seen. Thursday 17th A single Black Redstart was present on Kingsdown beach this evening. Sunday 13th A wander round today in the sunny, but cold weather produced 4 Buzzards, 1 Grey Wagtail and not much else, surprising as conditions were similar to yesterday. Nothing moving on the sea. A single Blackcap still present in Kingsdown.
Saturday 12th A brisk NW wind saw the first movement of the year with a single Buzzard in off the sea, 195 Chaffinches N in 2 hours, together with 16 Siskins and 336 Starlings. Saturday 5th The snowy weather curtailed much hope of any sea-watching although the Harbour Porpoise put in a brief appearance. A scan through a flock of 90 Lapwings revealed 5 Ruff and a Curlew near Kingsdown, but these were quickly lost in the worsening conditions.
