There was an unconfirmed report of a Great White Egret going to roost in Winkhurst Wood on the 29 th . However this record is pending as it is a possible mis-identification of a Little Egret which has been doing exactly the same at about the same time for several months.

 

WATER LEVEL


During the month the water level fell to 209.5 feet(3' 10" below top level).

Marsh Harrier Female flying west at 18.30 on the 24th.
Crane Two seen at 13.15 flying North-east on the 17th.
Ringed Plover Three seen on the 21st and 4 on the 26th .
Dunlin Up to 3 seen on 4 days in the month.
Arctic Tern One seen on the 2nd.
Black Tern Two seen on the 21st.
Yellow Wagtail One seen on the 17th.

In spite of the recent rainfall the water level continued to fall throughout the month

Up to 3 seen throughout the month
Shelduck
Seen regularly throughout the month with peak numbers of 33 adults and 14 juveniles on the 5th.
Mandarin
Up to 12 seen regularly
Ruddy Duck
A male seen on the 10th and the 20th
Buzzard
Up to 4 seen regularly
Peregrine
One seen on the 13th
Little Ringed Plover
One or two seen on many days
Redshank
One seen on the 9th.
Green Sandpiper
Seen from the 13th onwards with peak numbers of 4 on the 27th and 28th
Common Tern
Seen daily and using 9 nests(6 on Whiteside Island and 1 on each of the nearby rafts). Peak numbers including the first young hatched were 26 on the 28th.
Black Tern
Two seen on the 9th.
Grey Wagtail
Seen regularly with a family of 5 seen on the 5th
Nightingale
Two pairs believed to be breeding.  Typical of this secretive species only occasional sightings were reported.
Reed Warbler
One seen on the 20th.
Lesser Whitethroat
Seen regularly from the 10th onwards.
Whitethroat
Seen regularly with a peak number of 7 on the 5th.
Garden Warbler
Seen regularly with a peak number of 5 on the 5th.
Blackcap
Seen regularly with a peak number of 9 on the 5th.
Chiffchaff
Seen regularly with a peak number of 13 on the 14th
Willow Warbler
One seen occasionally.
