NEW BIRDS FOR THE YEAR

White-cheeked Pintail               White Pelican

WATER LEVEL

During the month the Water Level continued to fall due to the Company's use of water and also due to evaporation in the high temperatures(over 30 C on some dates).

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH

Without a shadow of a doubt the highlight of the month(and of the year) was a White Pelican which flew into the reservoir on the morning of the 30th. This bird was of unknown origin but did not bear any rings. If a wild bird it is the first for the UK since 2002 and one of only 3 records the year in Western Europe - others being 2 in the Netherlands and one further up the Rhine.
It is clearly in any case a first for the Reservoir. As this is being written on the 10th of August it was still present and frequently showing well near the Causeway.A photograph is shown.

The other new bird for the year was a Bahama Pintail (white) noted on various dates.
