NEW BIRDS FOR THE YEAR

Black-necked Grebe            Pink-footed Goose              Grey Plover

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH

Black-necked Grebe A juvenile seen on the 2nd.
Pink-footed Geese Five seen on the 7th.
Goldeneye One seen on the 25th
Marsh Harrier A female flew North at 15.45 on the 8th, another seen at 14.45 on the 12th.
Hen Harrier One seen flying North at 15.30 on the 6th.
Osprey One seen at 14.00 on the 4th.
Grey Plover Two Grey Plovers seen with three Ruff flying East at 17.15 on the 1st.  Another seen on the 2nd.
Knot One seen on the 13th
Pectoral Sandpiper The juvenile seen frequently in September stayed until the 3rd.
Ruff Three seen at 17.15 on the 1st flying East with two Grey Plovers.
Long-billed Dowitcher The juvenile first seen on the afternoon of 29th September stayed until the 2nd.
Redshank Two seen on the 22nd.  This species is, of course common elsewhere but, for some reason it is unusual at Bough  Beech.
Arctic Tern One or two juveniles seen bwtween the 1st and the 5th.
Skylark Up to six seen, or heard, on most days.
Pipit species Two large Pipits were seen flying South on the 6th but they could not be positively identified.
Wheatear One seen on the 7th with a female on the 23rd.
Fieldfare Up to 112 seen but mostly birds flying over.
Redwing Up to 180 seen but mostly birds flying over.
Brambling Up to 6 seen on most days.
Siskin Up to 30 seen on most days.
Redpoll Up to 11 seen on most days.
Yellowhammer Up to 3 seen, or heard, daily from the 25th.

WATER LEVEL

Startiung the month at 195' 2"(18' 2" below top level) it fell to 194'(19' 4" below top level by mid-month.  However the Water Company then started pumping and as a result it returned to approximately the same level as it was at the begining of the month.

 

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH

 

Red-crested Pochard A pair seen between the 3rd and the 9th.
Goldeneye One seen on the 10th and the 12th.
Goosander A female seen on the 17th.
Little Auk A first for Bough Beech, one found dead by the road below the Dam(see picture above)
Little Owl One was seen on the 10th.
House Sparrow Following a three month gap five were seen on the 2nd.
Brambling Seen all month with a peak number of 35 on the 24th. Most often in the Orchard(at the feeding station) or on the West end of the Causeway.
Yellowhammer Two seen on the 4th.

THERE WERE NO NEW BIRDS FOR THE YEAR

WATER LEVEL

Starting themonth at about 200'(13' 4" below top level) the water

rose to about 209'(4' 4" below top level) by the end of the month

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE MONTH

White-fronted Geese 9 were reported on the 19th and the 26th on both occasions being 3 adults and 6 immature birds. 23 were seen on the 28th and 27(all adults) on the 30th.
Pintail A female was seen on the 12th.
Goosander Reported on 6 dates between the 13th and the 30th usually late in the day with a peak number of 9(including 3 drakes) on the 18th.
Oystercatcher One seen on the 12th.
Chiffchaff A single bird was noted on several occasions during the month
Brambling Seen all month usually under the hoppers in the Orchard or amongst the leaf litter adjacent to the Causeway. The peak number reported was a total of 90 on Christmas Day.

It should be noted that there were 12 days in the month for which no records were received as a result others may have gone unreported.
