It is suspected that the large discrepancy between young hatched and fledged in the Tit Boxes was largely due to the activities of the pair of Tawny Owls which took over 1 box.

OTHER SPECIES

Little Grebe   1 pair bred and produced 1 or 2 young.
Great Crested Grebe   4 pairs nested and produced 8 young.
Grey Heron
25 occupied nests this year a considerably greater number than seen previously.
Common Tern

at least 6 pairs nested with the following result:

1 pair nested alongside a Canada Goose nest which was later trampled by the male Goose. They later re-nested and produced 3 young, 2 of which fledged.

Another pair nested on the raft closest to the shore and raised 2 young who fledged, but even before the juveniles fledged they relaid and produced a further chick.

On Whiteside Island 2 pairs nested and each produced  2 young, it is thought that these chicks were eaten by Cormorants.

The raft previously ignored on the North Lake was towed onto the Main Reservoir and within a few days another pair nested and produced young.

Nightingale

Following a pair nesting last year after an absence of many years it is thought highly likely that up to 4 pairs nested. The secretive nature of this species probably means that we will never know for certain.

Cetti's Warbler

1 pair may have nested in brambles close to the road.
