How Birds Work - John Buckingham

A look at the anatomy of British Birds and how they operate as well as detailed explanations of their feather and bone structure and digestive system. John will also give us an insight into bird migration and the relevance of colour in birds. It certainly promises to be a very educational talk with lots of wonderful close up photos.

Thursday 10th November 2011
Around the World in 80 Birds - Marcus Lawson
My inaugural talk detailing the highlights from a ten month World trip which took my family and I to some spectacular places with birds to match. Which was the bird I most wanted to see on the whole trip and what was my favourite out of the 1100 species I saw? There's only one way to find out so I hope to see you there!

Thursday 8th December 2011
My Lost Kent – Peter Kirby

Peter is a naturalist and Conservation Officer/Reserve Manager for Butterfly Conservation and with this talk he will share with us his extensive knowledge on conservation issues and how life has changed in the Kent countryside. We can look forward to many beautiful slides of butterflies, flowers and birds.

Thursday 12th January 2012
KOS Quiz Night
Our traditional post Christmas meeting, this year may see a change to the format in that the focus will be more on British Birds and could even include a more general knowledge feel to the event. More details will be announced on the website in due course.

Thursday 9th February 2012
Birding Frontiers - Martin Garner
A renowned expert on bird identification, Martin will encourage us to look at birds in a new and different way, and I mean really look. In the words of DIM Wallace:"Here it is, a bold and varied assault on some of the remaining barriers to identification and classification, be these related to the birds themselves or our increased inventions for determining such beings and all their taxa."
Please note that this is a ticket only event with an admission price of £4, email kosmeetings@yahoo.co.uk to reserve your ticket for what will undoubtedly be a very special evening.

Thursday 8th March 2012
On the Trail of the Crane, a journey through Europe - Ralph Todd

Of the 15 species in the world Ralph has seen and photographed 11. During this talk we take a brief look at the crane family and some of the conservation issues that surround them. For the most part however we shall take an in depth look at the Eurasian (common) Crane which breeds in Northern Scandinavia. Ralph has followed its fortunes on its migration route from Extremadura in Spain, through Northern France into Sweden where they congregate to fulfil their courtship ritual and dances and finally into Finland where its success depends on the vast wilderness areas to be found there. We hope to show that by following the fortunes of just one species we can enjoy a whole range of other wildlife, particularly birds, and some rather pleasant places to stay on route.

Thursday 12th April 2012
KOS Annual General Meeting

The AGM will be followed member's slideshows - time permitting. Non-members are welcome but they are unable to vote on KOS matters arising at the AGM.
