Indoor Meetings Programme 2009 - 2010 The
KOS is again running a programme of Indoor Meetings where speakers give illustrated
talks about many aspects of ornithology. Please note the venue: Meetings are held at the Grove Green Community Hall, Grove Green, Maidstone, which is adjacent to Tesco's Supermarket in Grovewood Drive, Grove Green. It is open from 7.15pm for a 7.45pm start. Also please note that meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, except for December, when we are moving forward a week because of Christmas schedules. Note also that the February meeting has also been moved a week ahead to Thursday 4th February 2010. As 2009 is the hundredth anniversary of ringing in Britain, an additional and joint meeting is being held with SBBO at the Sandwich Bay Observatory on October 29th (see below). It would be good to see KOS members giving their full support by attending this talk.
Barry Wright Where to go birding in North Kent and the birds to look out for, a journey that takes us from Dartford to Swalecliffe, essentially the KOS North Kent Recording area. It is rich in birds and reserves, as well as many less well visited corners that deserve more attention, whether it be for the commoner species, or the rarer ones.
Thursday October 29th 2009 "Celebrating 100 Years of Bird Ringing" Mark Grantham - BTO 2009 sees the BTO celebrating 100 years of ringing in Britain. Over that time we've learned an incredible amount about our birds, but there is always more to learn. Mark will highlight some of what we know, and also look at things we still need to discover, and look at some of the events of the last 100 years Please note that this talk is at Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory
Marek Borkowski The richness of the wildlife of North-East Poland is presented by Marek, who lives in the Biebrza Marshes - a stronghold for such rare species as Aquatic Warbler, Corncrake and Great Snipe
PLEASE NOTE : Unfortunately, we have to change the programme arranged for Dec 3rd , which will be replaced by a talk to be given by Peter and Pauline Heathcote. Details are as follows: Thursday December 3rd 2009 "Trogons, Toucans, Turkeys and Tikal" Peter and Pauline Heathcote Peter and Pauline will describe a trip they made to Belize ( and Tikal in Guatemala) last year. Belize, in Central America, has substantial areas of protected habitat including forests, savannas, and wetlands, and has an excellent diversity of neotropic birds supplemented in the winter and migration periods by american migrants. There are also lots of Mayan ruins to explore. Come along and find out the real story.
