Oare Marshes Latest Sightings (August)
Resident species in the general area at the moment include Little Egret, Brent Goose (3 - on Swale channel), Eider (3 - on Swale), Water Rail, Marsh Harrier, Hobby, Peregrine, Little Owl, Barn Owl, Gadwall, Wigeon, Shoveler, Ruddy Duck, Pochard, Avocet, Turtle Dove, Lesser Whitethroat, Bearded Reedling, Corn Bunting An adult Spoonbill has been present since 25th June. 26th August Single Little Stint, 18 Curlew Sandpipers and 9 Whimbrel at high tide late afternoon. No Spoonbill today. 23d August Migrants were passing overhead in clear, almost windless conditions. A mixed flock of c20 Common Terns, 4 Black Terns and 4 Little Gulls arrived from the Swale, flew slowly over the reserve and departed high to the south east, followed by 19 more Common Terns and 3 Sandwich Terns heading west. Groups of 6 and 13 Whimbrel flew south west along with several flocks of smaller waders. The following were counted on the East Flood at high water: 1056 Black-tailed Godwits, 20 Golden Plovers, 3 Greenshanks, 6 Knot, 1 Common Sandpiper, 9 Curlew Sandpipers, 20 Ruff, 28 Avocets, c200 Ringed Plovers, 325 Dunlin, 225 Redshanks, 1 Snipe, 1 Whimbrel and a Garganey. Raptors included a Peregrine, a Hobby and a juvenile Marsh Harrier. There were 6 Green Sandpipers, 1 Common Sandpiper and 2 Whinchats on the west side of the road plus another Garganey and 5 Wigeon in front of the hide. No sign of the Spoonbill this afternoon. 22nd August There was an adult winter Little Gull on the East Flood this afternoon along with the Spoonbill, 15 Curlew Sandpipers, 1 Grey Plover and a Garganey. On the West Flood there was a Common Sandpiper and a single Curlew Sandpiper with a small flock of Dunlin and Ringed Plovers. 21st August The Spoonbill is still present. Also a Garganey was on the east flood along with 9 Curlew Sandpipers, 25 Avocets, 6 Ruff, 3 Greenshanks, 1 Little Egret and around 800 Black-tailed Godwits. Also a Hobby, 2 Sparrowhawks and a Great Skua flew over the reserve. An Osprey was seen to the west of the reserve at Conyer. 19th August The adult Spoonbill is still present. Two Black Terns flew west after circling the east flood at 6 pm and there were 3 Curlew Sandpipers, 2 Greenshanks, 25 Ruff, 2 Green sandpipers, 25 Avocets, 2 Garganey and a Little Stint. 18th August A White Stork flew east over Oare Marshes at 2.00pm. Also 3 Curlew Sandpipers, 6 Greenshanks, 15 Ruff. 16th August Late morning, tide falling. On the East Flood: 2-3 Curlew Sandpipers, 2 Common Sandpipers, 38 Avocets, 6 Knot. Single Green Sandpiper on the South East Scrape. Several Sandwich Terns on the Swale channel. A juvenile Hen harrier was reported. One Clouded Yellow butterfly 15th August 2 Curlew Sandpipers and 1 Greenshank at low tide 13th August 3 Garganey, 3 Wheatears, 1 Pintail in eclipse, Spoonbill 12th August One Curlew Sandpiper, 12 Wheartears between Oare and Conyer 9th August On the East Flood at high this afternoon 1 Common Sandiper, 1 Greenshank, 700+ Black-tailed Godwits, 225 Redshanks, 1 Wigeon, 2 Garganey, 1 Golden Plover and the Spoonbill. Relatively few small waders. On the west side 2 Green Sandpipers and 2 Little Ringed Plovers. A flock of 25 Common Terns flew west. 8th August Hobby, Spoonbill, single Golden Plover with the other roosting waders at high water 5th August At high water this afternoon one adult Little Stint, 1 Greenshank, 2 Garganey in eclipse (1 male), 1 Green Sandpiper, the Spoonbill and the first Grey Plover for a while. On the west side 3 Juvenile Little Ringed Plovers and a Common Sandpiper. 3rd August Spoonbill, 2 Spotted Redshanks, 2 Garganey, Little Stint, 35 Ruff 2nd August Spoonbill, 20 Ruff, 1000+ Black-tailed Godwits 1st August Spoonbill, Little Owl near the cottages |
