Urgent Appeal: £150 000 needed for major extension to Oare Marshes Nature Reserve

Kent Wildlife Trust has had an unmissable opportunity to achieve huge gains for wildlife by purchasing a 35 acre extension to this popular reserve.  We used cash reserves for this in order to act swiftly.  We need your help to pay for the restoration of habitats flourishing in wildlife - and to cover the cost of purchase so that we are able to take similar action as opportunities arise in the future.

We need to raise £150 000 to: -

  • Construct sluices, dams and bunds to allow us to manipulate water levels for the benefit of birds like Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff, Wood Sandpiper, Spoonbill, Shoveler and Wigeon
  • Excavate shallow pools and channels
  • Manage the habitat to target specific species including nationally rare Garganey, Avocet, Bittern and Marsh Harrier
  • Create fringing reed to benefit birds such as Bearded Reedling, Water Rail, Cetti's Warbler and Stonechat
  • Cover the cost of purchasing this extension that will provide habitats for a diversity of plants, mammals and insects such as Sea Clover, Variable Damselfly and Water Shrew
  • Introduce a grazing and hay cutting regime to benefit grassland and wetland birds that require open vistas such as Lapwing, Redshank and Skylark
