May 26th

The rest of the country seems to have stacks of rarities, but our corner seems to be missing out at the moment. There were plenty of families enjoying the summer sunshine on Monday afternoon, but Derek Smith could find very few birds. With the tide up and people everywhere there was hardly a wader to be found, although Cold Harbour looks perfect for a scarcity any day now. He wandered from Chambers Wall to Cold Harbour and along the front for a while and managed to record the following: 2 adult Mediterranean Gulls flying W, 22 Turnstones, presumably summering non-breeders, 1 Dunlin, 2 Oystercatchers, 4 Ringed Plovers, 2 Shelducks, 2 Marsh Harriers, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Cuckoo and about 150 Painted Ladies flying W in the 2 hours he was sitting on the sea wall.

May 23rd

Marc Heath started very early this morning at 0315 and walked around the Oyster Farm in darkness and down to Coldharbour in the hope of hearing a Quail, but despite his ears working overtime, he did not hear one. He then met Barry Hunt at the Towers at 0545 where they walked again down to Coldharbour and back via Chambers Wall and the Green Wall. The highlight of the morning was when Barry picked out 2 distant herons flying in from the south at 0630. One was smaller, darker and slimmer and showed an obvious long dagger bill and after a debate, this was confirmed as a Purple Heron. Other birds noted included 2 Marsh Harriers, 1 Sparrowhawk, 2 Grey Partridges, 6 Sandwich Terns, 3 Cuckoos, 5 Tufted Ducks, 8 Shelduck, 4 Ringed Plover, 2 Fulmars, 2 Kestrels, 1 Little Egret, 2 Spotted Flycatchers at Chambers Wall, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 2 Dunlin, 2 Grey Herons, 4 Turnstone, 6 Yellow Wagtails, 2 Common Terns, 5 Oystercatcher, 4 Redshank, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 2 Common Buzzards and 5 Whitethroat.

May 14th

Tim Hodge had an early morning walk from Shuart to Reculver and back that was reasonably entertaining, although there was not much left of yesterday’s large arrival of Spotted Flycatchers and Garden Warblers. A Quail was calling just south of the Oyster Farm, and other bits included 1 Grasshopper Warbler, 1 Nightingale, 1 Barn Owl, 1 Little Owl, 1 Tree Pipit, 1 Lesser Redpoll, 2 Cetti’s Warblers, 1 Avocet, 1 Pochard, 6 Cuckoos, 10 Grey Plovers, 1 Bar-tailed Godwit, 2 Greenshank, 9 Common Sandpipers, 19 Sanderling, 2 Mediterranean Gulls, 1 Kittiwake, 3 Curlews, 19 Sanderling, 1 Eider and 1 Turtle Dove. May 13th

The wind had dropped considerably this morning as we parked at Chamber’s Wall to open the gate and almost immediately we saw a Tree Pipit fly in from height. At Chamber’s Wall car park there were 2 newly arrived Spotted Flycatchers with 2 more by the white poplars. It looked as if there had been an overnight arrival. Other birds we saw as we walked along the railway embankment and then on to Cold Harbour included 2 Shelduck, 3 Mallard, 1 Gadwall, 3 Tufted Duck, 1 Hobby, 6 Oystercatchers, 1 Greenshank, 16 Redshank, 1 Common Sandpiper, 2 Common Terns, 1 Turtle Dove, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Cuckoo, 8 Swifts, 4 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Cetti’s Warbler, 1 Lesser Whitethroat and 10 Whitethroats.

Derek Smith and Tim Hodge got thoroughly soaked this afternoon as they walked from Shuart to Plumpudding but they saw some good birds for their troubles. They recorded 8 Little Terns, 200 Swifts, 1 Common Redstart, 1 Whitethroat, 8 Garden Warblers, 1 Willow Warbler, 15 Spotted Flycatchers and 1 Pied Flycatcher.

Other birds seen between Bishopstone and Cold Harbour included 8 Spotted Flycatchers, 22 Common Sandpipers with one flock of 20 on beach east of Towers, 6 Bar-tailed Godwits, 8 Grey Plover, 3 Dunlin, 1 Whimbrel, 3 Cuckoos, 1 Hobby, 1 Willow Warbler, 1 Peregrine and 2 Little Terns, 8 Sandwich Terns, 7 Common Terns, 1 Gannet all these flying E.

Derek walked down West Brook Valley in the late afternoon and saw 2 Grey Partridges, 1 Nightingale, 1 Garden Warbler, 3 Blackcaps, 4 Chiffchaffs and 1 Spotted Flycatcher. He then visited Chamber’s Wall and Cold Harbour where he found 12 Grey Plover, 5 Common Sandpipers, 3 Bar-tailed Godwits, 5 Spotted Flycatchers and 1 Pied Flycatcher.

By my calculations there must have been at least 37 Spotted and 3 Pied Flycatchers in the recording area today.

May 12th

It was another very windy day with a NE gale blowing. I spent 50 minutes at the Towers this afternoon and did not see very much, just a few terns struggling E against the wind. I saw 1 Common Tern, 23 Sandwich Terns and 4 Little Terns.

I then visited Shuart but only saw 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 1 Whitethroat, 3 Blackcaps and 1 Chiffchaff.

May 11th

After the Lord Mayor’s Show as the saying goes!! Today was completely different to yesterday with a near gale force NE wind, no pratincole and most birds out of sight. This morning we walked from Chamber’s Wall to the Oyster Farm and then on to Cold Harbour and saw 7 Shelduck, 2 Tufted Duck, 1 Grey Heron, 1 male Marsh Harrier, 10 Oystercatchers, 3 Common Terns, 2 Turtle Doves, 4 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Lesser Whitethroat and 6 Whitethroats.

This afternoon I spent an hour at the Towers hoping for something good to fly by, but what I saw was 1 Eider and 18 Bar-tailed Godwits and the following birds flying E against the wind: 1 Gannet, 1 Fulmar, 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 2 Common Terns and 50 Sandwich Terns.

May 10th

It was one of those exciting and not to be forgotten mornings that you occasionally get when you bird watch. It started with a phone message from Marc Heath at 0750 to say he had just had a pratincole fly past him at Chamber's Wall flying towards Reculver - probably the same bird that had been seen at Grove two days ago. We were just on our way out and so drove to Reculver where we met Matt, but there was no sign of the bird. We walked along the seawall and up the Green Wall where Matt's sharp eyes picked out a pratincole in the distance hawking for insects above the River Wantsum and then disappearing again. With Barry Hunt we then walked back to the Oyster Farm lagoons where almost immediately Matt picked out the bird flying along the back of the embankment. It flew out to Brook but soon returned and landed. It was at this point that we suddenly realised that we could not see chestnut underwings and that the features associated with a Collared Praticole were not there and it began to dawn on us that we were infact looking at a BLACK-WINGED PRATINCOLE, a mega rarity. We put the news out and soon birders were arriving in numbers.

Below are two photos of this difficult to photograph bird, but hopefully if it stays longer, better ones will appear.

Other birds we saw included 9 Greylag Geese, 18 Shelduck including 8 ducklings, 2 Shoveler, 1 Grey Heron, 2 Little Egrets, 8 Turnstone, 5 Whimbrel, 1 Greenshank, 1 Common Sandpiper, 7 Common Terns, 7 Yellow Wagtails, 1 Cetti's Warbler and 2 Whitethroats.

Marc Heath decided on a visit to Chambers Wall this morning. Having had a quick drive through the lanes en route and noting 1 Nightingale, 4 Blackcaps and a few Whitethroats he  arrived just before 0500 where birds were in good voice. He walked around the Green Wall, down to Coldharbour and back. Birds noted were 3 Cuckoos, 2 Red legged Partridges, 20 Whitethroats, 3 Skylarks, 6 Tufted Ducks, 2 Gadwall, 2 Turtle Doves, 1 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Shoveler, 2 Little Egrets, 10 Yellow Wagtails and 1 Grasshopper Warbler reeling along the Green Wall. There were also 10 Shelduck, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Little Grebes, 6 Redshank, 5 Oystercatcher, 10 Greylag Geese, 4 Mallard, 1 Fulmar flying W, 1 Sparrowhawk, 4 Barnacle Geese flying E, 4 Dunlin, 1 Wheatear, 5 Turnstone, 1 Ringed Plover and good numbers of Sedge Warblers singing.

It must be every birders dream to be part of finding a 'Mega' so he was stunned when at 0750, he picked out a pratincole flying low west from Chambers Wall towards Reculver Towers. Phone calls were made and after an agonising wait, the bird was refound and at last confirmed as a BLACK-WINGED PRATINCOLE. Days like this are few and far between so he left for home a very happy person. There was also a Whinchat at Chambers Wall and earlier in the dark, he saw a Badger near the Roman Galley.
