Eustace Barnes

Eustace Barnes is a wildlife artist and tour guide. Born in 1963, Eustace developed an interest in birding and painting at an early age whilst growing up in a family of artists in Faversham. In the early 1980’s Eustace travelled across Europe before going to University to study Geography and Biology. Having developed an academic appreciation of the natural world, Eustace travelled to South America to experience for himself the prolific birdlife of the Amazon and since then has never looked back.

It was whilst working at Explorer’s Inn in Peru that Eustace developed a liking for guiding groups of birders around the reserve to see many of the 585 species recorded there. At the same time he worked at improving his skills as a field artist.  Since that time, Eustace has specialised in running birdwatching tours to every corner of Central and South America.

Eustace has worked on several field guides as an artist. These have included 'The Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of Peru' by James Clements, 'Pigeons and Doves of the World', and, most recently, the monograph on Bowerbirds by Frith and Frith which is published by OUP. At the moment Eustace is illustrating ' A Field Guide to the Birds of Bolivia’, a monumental project of some 175 plates.  In the future Eustace will share illustrative work to the third volume of ‘The Birds of South America’ by Robert Ridgely.
