How to subscribe and guidelines for posting

List Moderator: Julian Russell

Welcome to the KOSNet mailing list. Our friendly group have an interest in the birds of Kent, England. We welcome messages about birds and birdwatching in Kent. Please make yourself familiar with this charter and use it when sending messages to the list. If you post messages outside the remit of this list then you may find yourself open to messages that will quickly correct your error; persistent offenders will be unsubscribed from the list.

The Group settings are as follows:

Listed in directory
• Open membership
• Unmoderated (mail is distributed immediately and automatically to all list members, and postings to the list are monitored by the list owner/moderator who may, or may not take an active part in the discussion)
• All members may post
• Archives for members only
• Email attachments are not permitted

RARE BREEDING BIRDS:

Before posting information on KOSnet or contacting any other news media give careful consideration and first priority to wild birds well being.
Rare birds (especially Schedule 1 species) arrival, presence and location is highly sensitive information, especially where known or potential breeding habitat is concerned. This knowledge can aid and abet egg thieves with serious intent to commit criminal offences. Please do not post such information and remember that news media services may not be aware of the local situation and circumstances.

• Messages of an offensive nature, messages with binary or other attachments (e.g. pictures, word-processor files, HTML)
• commercial advertising matter, test messages (address all problems to the list owner)
• off-topic messages

All messages sent to the list should be in PLAIN TEXT, not HTML format. Reports of major rarities from elsewhere in the country are welcome but please include the phrase "National Rarity" in the Subject field. Offers or requests for lift sharing from Kent are welcome.

'Netiquette'

Quoting

Please quote only the relevant parts of previous messages. Remove signatures, header/footer information and the automatic KOSNet signature quoted in your replies.

Subject Line

Use the subject line! (e.g. change the subject line if replying to a previous post but changing the subject). Acronyms such as RFI (Request for Information) are welcomed. Long messages should have the word LONG in the subject line.

Replying

Who are you replying to? Do you really need to send the message to the entire list? Can you receive private replies and then compose and post a summary either to the list or interested parties?
