Ray O’Reilly, KOS Field Trip organiser, led the March 2023 KOS Outdoor Meeting on Sunday 5th March, and writes:-
‘During the course of the day, our group recorded 83 species of bird, many of which were seen exceptionally well.
The day started at Worth Marshes with resident birder Neil Davies. The site looked to be in superb condition with many birds present, including a pristine White Stork, 2 Great White Egrets and good numbers of waterfowl.
Participants had excellent telescope views of a pair of Ravens and a Mistle Thrush before the group moved on to Pegwell Bay. We arrived just as the tide was ebbing and watched a host of waders, including Grey Plover, Knot, Sanderling, Turnstone and some small groups of Dark-bellied Brent Geese.
Lunch was taken in the Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory from where the group enjoyed views of a Tree Sparrow on the feeders. Afterwards the group walked toward the beach along the Ancient Highway, where birds seen included five Common Eider, a Black Redstart and a brace of Grey Partridges - no longer a common bird in Kent.
Near the scrape splendid views of a pair of Barn Owls were enjoyed, plus at least three Short-eared Owls which flew close to the group in broad daylight. A great owl experience! Our final bird of the day was a Cattle Egret close to the Observatory as we were preparing to leave.
It was a great day of birding enjoyed by all.
Thanks to Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory, Neil Davies and Ivan Macey for their assistance and of course to Lyn Griffiths for her essential help in running the day.’
