Oare Marshes (06:30 to 10:30) A sharp overnight frost, then a beautiful calm and sunny winter's morning. Temp. -3 - 5C - EF mostly frozen. LT circa 09:30. [Murray Wright]  Map

26 Pintail (on mostly frozen EF), 1 Bar-tailed Godwit (from SWH), 18 Snipe (on EF incl. six on ice amongst Lapwings), 2 Greenshank (in FC), 5 Spoonbill (distantly on Sheppey saltings again), 1 Great White Egret (flew W at 07:44), 3 Marsh Harrier (male and two imm. females), 2 Hen Harrier (ad. male flew E through reserve at 07:43; small ringtail (juv. male?) flew W through reserve at 09:00), 3 Barn Owl (two hunting around reserve again, plus one flying into barn on Sheppey), 1 Tawny Owl (male called ('hooted'!) clearly circa 15 times between 06:35-06:45 from the SW towards the fishing ponds - only my second record here!), 1 Merlin (male flew close past EH and settled for five mins. in tall trees to E of cottages), 2 Raven (around pylons and W side all morning), 3 Fieldfare, 4 Stonechat (two pairs), 1 Water Pipit (EF)
